Pioneer CDJ -1000MK3 Professional CD / MP3 Turntable

MP3 Support

Improved Jog Dial
 The CDJ-1000MK3's 7-inch jogdial has been improved to offer DJs another world's first--the ability to quickly and easily alter the resistance of the jog wheel, which benefits from a new metallic 'non-slip' finish. The Jog Dial Display is now brighter and has been brought closer to the surface of the Jog for better viewing angles. Hot Cue (sampler)
 Memorizes up to 3 cue points per CD. These points can then be recalled by hitting either of the A, B or C buttons. This function can also be used like a mini sampler for vocals, stabs, or breaks, adding that touch of creativity to any DJ set. The MK3 now allows loops to be stored to Hot Cues.

Reverse
 Instant reverse is controlled by using a toggle switch. With no loss of tempo or pitch, it can be used immediately within any track without having to stop or start.

Real Time Seamless Loop
 A quick and simple way to set a loop while a track is playing. Once the loop is set, it can then be looped continuously or until the ReLoop / Exit button is pressed. When released, the track continues playing without any pause. The loop can be re-trigged at any time by hitting the ReLoop button.

Loop In / Out Adjust
 Another world first from Pioneer--is the ability to adjust both the In and Out points of a loop stored in memory. So now fine tuning a loop is both quick and easy. Loop-In adjust is only available on the CDJ-1000MK3.   


Reloop
Hitting the newly backlit Reloop button instantly takes you back to the beginning of the loop stored in the CDJ-1000MK3's memory. Clever use of Reloop can create some sample like effects. The same loop is always stored in memory until replaced with a new loop.
 

Memory
The CDJ-1000MK3 has a memory feature that lets you store Wave Data as well as Cue and Loop points. The data can be stored on a removable memory card (MMC or SD) or the players internal memory. The removable memory card can also be used in any CDJ-1000, so once you've stored your favorite cue and loop points they're stored for life. The CDJ-1000MK3 also has a feature that allows you to duplicate memory cards. The display of the MK3 has been improved to give more accurate display of memory points within the track.
Wave Display
Another improvement for the MK3 is an improved Wave Display offering a better resolution and continuous display. Wave data is stored to the memory card for instant recall when a track is called up.
Track Display
CD-Text and ID3 data is displayed within the main display area for rapid track identification. An indicator also shows the total number of tracks available for playback.
CD Control

  • Jog Mode
    The CDJ-1000MK3 can be set in either Vinyl or CDJ mode. In CDJ mode, the jog dial functions just like a Pioneer CDJ player, but without the touch sensitivity.

    When the CDJ-1000MK3 is in vinyl mode, the top of the jog dial functions just like a Vinyl Turntable. Pressing down stops the music and allows you to scratch or cue your track by rotating the jog dial in either direction.
  • Vinyl Speed Adjust Touch/Brake and Release/Start
    Separate control knobs allow for quick adjustment of start and stop timing.
Tempo

  • Master Tempo
    Pioneer's Master Tempo locks the pitch of the track even when you change the speed. You can speed up or slow down the beat without any noticeable difference in how the vocal and instruments sound.
  • Tempo Control
    A 100mm linear high precision slider gives DJs total control and ensures that the tempo adjustment is easy and accurate.
  • Tempo Control Range
    Ranges of +/- 6%, +/-10%, +/-16% and +/-100% (+70%/-100% for MP3) can be assigned to the Tempo Control slider.
  • Tempo Control Reset
    Resets the tempo to 0% or original tempo of the track regardless of the slider position.
Eject Button & CD Lock
The CDJ-1000 has a guard to prevent you from accidentally pressing it the eject button. The CD is locked until the track is stopped. This can be deactivated as well if you are looking to do quick mixes. The player also features a new Quick Return function; in the event you accidentally eject a playing CD, re-inserting the CD will resume playback from the point the music stopped.
Multi-Read Format
The CDJ-1000MK3 can read CD, CD-R and CD-RW disks for CD-Audio and MP3 data formats.
Front Loading
Loading CD's without having to open doors or trays makes swapping discs and selecting tracks that much faster. It also helps to keep dirt and any nasty substances out of the CD's working parts.
Cue Functions

  • Auto Cue
    This is the fastest way to find the beginning of a track. The sound level can also be changed to suit your style of music (-36db to -78db). There is also an option to turn it off if you prefer to cue up your CD tracks manually.
  • Real Time Cue
    A cue point can be set on the fly and stored into the internal memory by just simply hitting the In / Real-time cue button.
  • Cue Marker Display
    The current cue point is indicated within the jogdial's center display to show where the cuepoint is relative to the current play position.
Legato Link Conversion For High Quality Sound
Equipped with Pioneer's wide range technology--Legato Link Conversion. The CDJ-1000MK3 is capable of reproducing sound frequencies above 20kHz, which are lost during normal CD-format playback. Not only does this give great sound reproduction but sounds closer to the original recording and more analog like vinyl.
Shock-Proof Memory and Anti-Vibration Construction
Sound jumps or skipping is prevented by using shock-proof memory for continuous playback even in the event of a bump or knock.
Anti-Vibration
Oil-dampened floating suspension prevents sound skipping, even when the player is subjected to impact during use or vibrations generated from high volume music and low frequency bass.
Digital Output
The CDJ-1000MK3 is equipped with full-feature digital output. This means you can keep your scratching and master tempo playback entirely in the digital domain. Users who simply want to use the digital output for archival purposes may do so via the digital mode switch on the rear of the unit. All connectors on the rear of the unit are now gold-plated for higher connection quality and longevity.

Technics 1200s Turntable


Ask any pro DJ, and he or she will tell you the undisputed king of all turntables is the Technics “1200”
(Figure 4.1). In 1969, Technics (a division of Panasonic, which is a division of Japanese electronics
conglomerate Matsushita) produced the world’s first direct drive turntable, the SP-10.  Ten years and
several engineering refinements later, Technics made history with the first SL-1200, and then the SL-1200
MK2, the industry legend. To this day, more than three million Technics 1200s have been sold, and are
still the smartest and best made turntables in the entire world. There have been a few minor changes
here and there over the past few years, but the 1200 still looks virtually identical to the way it looked
when it was first produced. It was made so well that there are several 10-, 15-, and even 20-year-old 1200s
still in service!

My personal 1200 MK2s are over 15 years old and they work perfectly even after thousands of club and
mobile gigs. I’ve personally used several 1200s that have run 5-7 nights a week for over 10 years with not
even one major problem. Those tables saw cigarettes, fog, dust, smoke, water, spills, chills, and other
abuse that would have rendered virtually any other non-alien mechanical component dead and buried.
Heck, even the Maytag repairman envies the 1200! Sure, some parts wear out with heavy use, but
Technics sells a wide range of user replaceable parts. They’re incredibly durable, and very easy to use.
The Technics 1200 (shown in Figure 4.1) is nothing less than the perfect electronic component. Even
though I gave away most of my vinyl, I’ll probably never sell my set.

Belt Drive vs. Direct Drive

Turntables come in two flavors—direct drive and belt drive. Belt drive turntables use something that
looks like a giant rubber band that connects the motor to the platter to spin the platter. Due to the
inherent stretch factor of that rubber belt, belt drives are typically less stable when it comes to trying to
maintain a constant tempo, which could be a bummer if you’re planning to beatmix. Other issues with
belt drives is their sluggish startup, slow response to pitch adjustments, and lack of torque (a measure
of the physical force delivered to rotate the platter), which pretty much kills their scratching potential.
My first turntables were belt drives with a pitch control. They were meant for home stereo applications,
but I didn’t have enough money for real DJ turntables at the time. They skipped all the time, and the
shaky unreliable belt drive tempo adjustments made my beatmixing a complete nightmare. If you’re in a
stable environment on a concrete platform with an earthquake resistant DJ booth, and you won’t ever
beatmix or scratch, you may be able to use belt drive turntables. Their main advantage is their cost—you
can get belt drives for less than $100 each. 


There are no belts in direct-drive turntables. Instead, these turntables utilize a complex magnetic
mechanism that connects the motor directly to the platter. This allows direct drives to start and stop a
whole lot quicker than belt drives, and pitch adjustments are virtually instantaneous. Plus, their added
torque helps them get up to playing speed much quicker than belt drive. Direct drive turntables tend to
keep their speed much more constant. Virtually all pro DJs use direct drive turntables. Trust me, you want
direct drives if you can afford them, no matter what kind of DJ you plan to be. They’ll cost anywhere
from $200 to $1,000 each, cartridges not included.

Turntables

Fortunately for all you “vinyl junkies” in DJ land, record players or “turntables” are still being massproduced
and more popular than ever. New professional turntables can easily run you from $800-$1,500
a pair. There are less expensive options; you can often find this equipment for sale used in classified
advertisements or on an Internet auction site. I sold a bunch of my old equipment on eBay for much less
than I bought it for. 

As a matter of fact, vinyl is still so cool that a company called Vestax, well known for its popular mixers,
manufactures a pretty amazing unit that records audio from any source, CDs, MP3 players, microphones,
computers, or whatever else you can plug into it directly on to Vestax vinyl blank records. Imagine having the ability to press your own vinyl—how cool would that be! Vestax’s VRX-2000 unit has a small cutting
head that actually cuts the grooves into the vinyl blanks. These recordable records will hold up to 14
minutes of audio on each side. The stylus cutter is replaceable, and has an average lifespan of 200-300
minutes of recorded audio. At about $375 per cutter, this can get kind of pricey if you decide to make a
lot of records. Oh, and the unit itself is in the neighborhood of $9,000. 



Professional turntables differ from consumer versions in several ways. Pro turntables have a “pitch”
(speed) control, which allows you to physically change the speed of the record with a sliding control. This
allows you to speed up or slow down your incoming record so that you can more easily “mix” the two
records for a smooth transition between songs. Most pro turntables will allow you to speed up or slow
down a record by 8% or more. Pro tables are much more durable than consumer tables, and this is very
important if you’re going to be throwing them in the back of your car and slamming through potholes on
your way to gigs. 



Most pro turntables have a colored strobe light on them with little metal nubs on the platter. These are
used to show that your turntable platter is rotating faster or slower than exactly 33 1/3 or 45 revolutions
per minute (RPM). 



Pro turntables usually have a mechanism known as “quartz lock,” which helps make the speed constant
when locked in the zero-pitch change position. I’ve heard of some DJs having the quartz lock removed for
more control while mixing, but I never found this necessary.

The Basic Equipment

Sound systems consist of five basic groups of equipment. 

 1. At least two music playing sources. Since DJs must keep a continuous flow of music,
they use at least two music sources. These sources can be any equipment that plays
pre-recorded music. Today, one can choose from CD players, turntables, MiniDisc players,
cassette tape players, DAT decks, computers, digital DJ systems, or stand-alone MP3
players. Any combination of these will do for playing straight music, but performance
DJ setups are more picky. You can mix from one turntable to a CD player. You can even
mix from a computer to a cassette player. Using the second player allows you to mix in
another song before the initial song has ended, allowing for a continuous program
without spaces between the music. Most mobile and club DJs use two CD players, two
turntables or a combination of both to play their music. Many mobile jocks are now
utilizing new technology such as MiniDisc and MP3 players, which we’ll discuss later.


2. Mixers, also known as “preamplifiers.” Your music sources output a really weak electronic
signal that must be amplified and converted into a controllable line-level signal. Mixers
control the individual volumes of each music source and let you determine the output
level of each channel. 


 3. Amplifiers. The preamplified line-level signal is then electronically amplified so that
its resulting volume is strong enough to significantly overpower the room noise. The
amplified signal is sent over wires to remotely placed speakers that produce the sound
we hear.


 4. Speakers. Paper, plastic, or urethane cones are attached to a mounted coil of wire that is
vibrated by a magnet that produces an electronic vibration based on the signal that comes
directly from the amplifier. The coil moves the cone, the cone moves the air molecules
touching it, and those vibrating air molecules are sent all over the room hopefully ending
up in your eardrum.


 5. Other stuff. Microphones, headphones, booth monitors, cables, connectors, and other
stuff that make your DJ job possible, easier, and/or more fun.
